Rannveig is a physical geographer with her main research interests being geographic information related to the environment and spatio-temporal modelling. In recent years she has been focussing more and more on the interrelationship between tourism and the environment, particularly tourism and wilderness, tourism environmental impacts, sustainable tourism management, wilderness mapping, and wilderness management. Rannveig has a long experience of mountaineering within the Icelandic highlands, and during the past three decades she has experienced huge changes of these wild resources, increasing her research interest on the topic of wilderness.
